Club Assembly, 8th June

The first meeting of the month was the Club Assembly, the most important meeting of the new Rotary year July 2015/2016 when the incoming president Richard Shean sets out his vision for the future. This was followed by his standing Committee Chairpersons who were elected at the annual general meeting on the 11th May. Here are the key points from Richard and the Committee Chair

Adding to this programme the new (well old) John Warner will take the challenge as Entertainment Officer to achieve once a month social events. Also peter brown will continue as PR Officer posting good news to local papers. Geoffrey Hughes will carry on as Almoner and Attendance Officer. The Rotary Golf Competition will still be overseen by President Richard. David Wyn Mackenzie who has chaired Gold Hill Fair for several years will be standing down so he can concentrate on his new secretarial/communication role where he will also take over the website timeline which records the monthly activities of the Club, so we are delighted that Berenice Deakin has taken on this challenge. Berenice will continue to run the Foundation 100 Club draw and the Members Raffle.

Tony Morgan will continue to promote the Business Partners Scheme and Corporate Membership. Amy Coughlan (Ex-Officio) will retain responsibility to maintain and improve the website, in conjunction with Tony (Amy is sponsored by The Wessex Group)

Kids Out

In terms of Shaftesbury Rotary Clubs profile in supporting worthy causes, “Kids Out” is one of (if not the best event) we commit ourselves to. This is an annual event of taking some 70 children with learning difficulties from Yewstock School (near Sturminster) to Longleat for the day, where we provide transport, food and drink at no cost to the School.

I gather from John Warner it was a great day out and our thanks to Frome Rotary Club for organising the event, and to Sturminster and Gillingham Rotary clubs for their continued financial support, and of course to John for his continued involvement.

Guest Speaker – Joy Morley

Berenice Deakin hosted the guest speaker from Clic Sargent a cancer charity for children with cancer. Joy Morley spoke with passion and personal knowledge of the sadness and trauma of friends being diagnosed with this dreadful disease. Her message was even more poignant when the club has been notified by our Corporate Member “Shaftesbury School” of the terminal cancer illness of one of their 15 year old girls.
Footnote: Shaftesbury Rotary will report later on how it has responded to the Schools’ request for support.

Honorary Member Tony Davies

Great to see Tony Davies (Honorary Member) back again to enlighten us regarding his memories and experience during his time as a Wing Commander in the RAF during the Cold War period. We heard fascinating stories about flying the “Victor” and the world famous “Vulcan Bomber”, which sadly is due to become a museum exhibit.
Tony spent 28 years full service and a further 17 years as a volunteer reservist; however Tony’s career has not been put on the shelf as he is now a regular visiting lecturer on cruise ships recounting his exploits. Well done to Mike Foote for asking Tony back again.

Presidential Handover, 29th June

Every 5th Monday in a month the club hosts a wives/partners evening. These are few and far inbetween (just three excluding December) during the Rotary year. However, this particular 5th evening by the quirk of the calendar fell in June which enabled our wives/partners to share in the formal handover of the Rotary President’s Chain of Office from Mike Farrow to Richard Shean.
Congratulations to Mike on a very full, active and successful year, and best wishes to Richard to continue the good work and re-establishment of Shaftesbury Rotary at the heart of the community.
Pictured from left to right we have Past President Mike and wife Jill, then President Richard and his wife Dawn.
