Gold Hill Fair 2015
We were blessed with good weather and a happy atmosphere, with crowds enjoying themselves in the sunshine. The Fair opened with a parade led by our Town Band and followed by a presentation of prizes to local voluntary organisations taking part. We had a great programme of music in the wonderful surroundings of the Abbey, and of course Folk dancing in front of the Town Hall. There were a wide variety of stalls including our own bottle stall – but this year courtesy of our president Richard with a “Ha-wine” (Hawaiian!) twist – see picture.
There was a good range of entertainments for children with fairground rides, donkeys, face painting and – courtesy of the Army Cadets a spectacular climbing frame. Make sure you visit our Gallery page for the pictures!
We are grateful to Stalbridge Linen one of our Corporate partners who organised a van pull in the High street which attracted a great crowd. We hope to feature this again next year, so look out for our advertising if your pub, club or business would like to enter a team in 2016! We would also like to record our thanks to the local branch of Bath Travel, who are joining us as one our business partners, and who ran a raffle in association with, and in aid of Weldmar hospice.
In what is now becoming a regular feature of Gold Hill Fair we opened the Trinity Tower with the assistance of Dorset Marshals for public access to the top with its spectacular views of the town.
We were left feeling very happy with an good fun community event, which should have raised a worthwhile sum for our lead charity – The Friends of Westminster Memorial Hospital – and other good causes.
Speakers Evening – Rank Organisation – 13th July
Eddie Clement’s granddaughter Alexandra gave us an interesting and very well presented account, of her time working as a student, at a Rank Organisation charity supporting ex-prisoners. We were especially impressed by the success rate for preventing reoffending and returning to prison.
Cann Flour Mill Picnic – 16th July
We enjoyed a picnic at Mike Stoates’ Cann Flour Mill with an interesting tour of the premises, to see the machinery working and to hear the history of the mill. We then enjoyed an excellent picnic in the attractive surroundings of the mill pond. It was so enjoyable that no one remembered to take a photograph – Sorry!

Business Meeting – 20th July
Amongst much else Tony Morgan reported on the success so far of our business partners venture, which will help our charitable activity, and we hope provide a mutually worthwhile link with local businesses. We have over forty firms which have committed to join. The response to Tony’s initiative has been overwhelmingly and enthusiastically positive.
Meeting – 27th July
On Monday the 27th July, Win Harvey introduced Nicki Adams who then gave a short talk on addiction. She informed all members that many people can be addicted to a variety of addiction problems which include alcohol and drug misuse. Nicki has lectured on this subject at Bath University and is a consultant at Clouds House in East Knowle which provides residential treatment programmes for people with addiction problems. Members were enlightened by this talk and had so many questions to ask that the President had to intervene and call the proceedings to a close!
