Red Moon

Great pictures from Berenice Deakin! This month we saw a very rare phenomenon called a Red Moon, as part of a lunar eclipse. This happens when the Moon is full and passes into Earth’s shadow , which darkens it. At that point, the Moon is no longer being illuminated by the Sun. The red light passing through the Earth’s atmosphere does reach the Moon, and is therefore reflected off of it. Berenice managed to stay awake until 1am when the eclipse began to happen, and got some great photos of the moon turning a lovely coppery red!

14th September – Sam Hayward, Virginia Hayward

We were treated to a fascinating talk by Sam Hayward of Virginia Hayward Hampers Ltd. We learned how this local firm started from packing hampers on a kitchen table at Christmas to supplying hampers to big companies like Waitrose and John Lewis. Every year they supply hundreds of thousands of these, almost all in the few weeks leading up to Christmas when the workforce expands enormously. This year they are celebrating 30 years of business!

A hamper is an excellent Christmas gift and it is recommended you visit the Virginia Hayward website before they run out!

 21st September – Business Meeting

Amongst other matters we discussed two forthcoming fundraising events – our fashion evening and also our Golf day. We reviewed possible donations and made plans for our Christmas party.

September 27th – William Moore

William to the rescue! Having a postponement from his invited speaker at short notice, William concocted a health and safety quiz which left most members flummoxed! But not our farming Rotarian Steve who was a clear winner. Well done William and congratulations Steve.

New Members

What a great evening for our club with the welcome not one but two new members by our Rotary President. We welcomed Guy Lowton, a local solicitor who spent many years with Farnfields and Nicolls as a senior partner based in Shaftesbury, he is now semi-retired, and acting as a consultant to Farnfields. We also welcome Paul Slimm who is a well-known quantity surveyor having spent most of his career in the construction industry, Paul was a member of the Wincanton Rotary Club before they sadly disbanded.
