2^nd October – Charities benefit from Golf Day

Shaftesbury Rotary Club’s Annual Charity Golf Day at Rushmore in early October was a great success, with glorious weather and the course in excellent condition. 88 golfers, in 22 teams of four competed for a variety of prizes. The only lady golfer was closest to the ‘Hole in One’ for a car, but the prize was not won. This year the overall winning team was Wirefr3. Ltd.
President Richard Shean, who organised the event and also played, said “Rotary thanks the 25 sponsors, the players, the prize donors, the helpers, and the Golf Club, who have all contributed to a most enjoyable and successful day in support of our charities, one of which is here today”

He then introduced Amy Kidd of Julia’s House, who spoke about the origins of this hospice for children and of the plans for a second hospice in Salisbury. A grand tombola concluded the day’s proceedings, which helped raise over £3000 in total for charities supported by Shaftesbury Rotary.

12^th October – Meeting

Special meeting to discuss how to maintain our success with the Rotary Business Partners project -We had an excellent attendance and following a constructive exchange of suggestions, we concluded with a set of recommendations to be investigated and resourced. 16^th October – President & Senior Vice setting the trend

Richard Shean & Bernard Skam stepped up in “style” on the catwalk for the Shaftesbury Rotary Fashion Show kindly hosted by M & Co, one of our High Street retailers and online store www.mandco.com
The evening was attending by about 60 guests who were treated to a buffet and a glass of wine on arrival, before being seated for a non-stop 45 minutes of glamorous models doing at least four changes with a full commentary and promotion by Lisa, The Manager. During the interval guests enjoyed further refreshments and a raffle with a large array of prizes.

The second half brought another 45 minutes of jaw dropping and eye opening outfits from the Boutique, Petite and Partyline wear, finishing up with the Christmas wear. Particular thanks must be given to Lisa and her team for all the work preparing the evening and keeping most of the models in order back stage.

The buffet and nibbles were kindly donated by Dorset Foods and Dan Scrivens. Thanks also to Trish Lever for taking the lead for Rotary in organising a most enjoyable evening.
A special thank you to all the female models who displayed the outfits with excellent poise and decorum, the show would not have been as successful if not for you.

Alas, the men were seen to be over acting and taking a more theatrical role to their part in the evening, extending their presence on stage and disrupting the audience with suggestive poses and provocative comments.

The proceeds of the evening raised over £340 for Shaftesbury Rotary local charities, plus a lot of entertainment to the guests, models and hosts on a mid-October Friday evening.

It only remains for us to thank everyone for coming along as the support you give to us allows us in turn to support those individuals and community groups in our town less fortunate.

Business Meeting

Committee chairs and members reported on their progress to date measured against their club assembly targets which can be found on the June timeline and the member’s page. One new possibility was raised, that being to see if one of two empty shops in Shaftesbury could be taken for one or two weeks as a “pop up” shop to sell Rotarians unwanted attic/garage stuff to raise money for the club – Tony to investigate.
Peter gave an update on the shoe box scheme due to be completed by early November.

Twinning – A board was circulated to try and determine how many Rotarians, wives and partners intended to visit Heerlen over April 22^nd – 25^th

26th Oct – Partner’s Evening

On Monday October 26th we enjoyed our Partners Evening with a meal at the Fleur de Lys, followed by a fascinating talk introduced by Peter McClellan who was introduced by Trish Lever. Peter has led many groups on visits to First World War battlefields. Peter talked to us about 1915 – the year of the ‘loss of innocence’. The war had not finished by Christmas and many lives were lost fighting to gain just a few yards. It was also the first time gas was used on both sides.
