2 December – Late Night Shopping

Shaftesbury Rotarians turned out in their Christmas wear and Tabbards to run a decorated stall with laser light show selling Gluwhein, Spiced Apple and Mince Pies. The Festive evening in the community started with a parade up to The Town Hall. The Lighting up Ceremony with Guest celebrities followed by Music and Song performed by Anne Louise Richardson and local band Bad Edukation.

Alas the Proceeds to charity were 50% down on previous Years at £155 and the Rotary vocals were no match for Bad Edukation, However the Festivities, Fellowship and Fun were Fanatastic.

Thank you for all your support of Rotary throughout the year with the events we organise and the fundraising for Local and International Charities.

5 December – Speakers Friend, Nigel Marsh

Nigel Marsh was Bernard Skam’s speaker for the evening, Nigel was a deep sea diver with the Royal Navy and is now an ‘’off shore work site representative’’. Working on oil rigs and ships looking after the welfare of the divers that work on undersea installations, his presentation focused on the Clair and Claire ridge, two very large oil fields in the north sea. It was an excellent talk and thank you to Nigel for coming in to speak with us.

We also had a presentation of gifts for the staff of the Fleur De Lys where we said a big thank you and gave a cheque to Mary,David,Mark & loyal staff who have looked after us so well during the year.

6 December – Defibrillator Demo

Rotary Club of Shaftesbury purchased a Defibrillator in 2014 for use in the town and it is sited at Saxon Photographic in the High Street. As part of the ongoing service to the community, Rotary arranges annual demonstrations on how to use this life saving piece of kit. The latest demonstration was held on Tuesday 6th December and was hosted at Shaftesbury Football Club in their modern function room. They were very welcoming and looked after the good turnout of 35 people who attended to either refresh their knowledge or find out for the first time how to use this valuable machine. The very valuable and interesting session was run by Kate Fisher from the South Western Ambulance Service, who provide regular checks and maintenance on our machine to ensure it remains in pristine condition should it ever be needed. 7 December – Tribute to Roy Wykes

Honorary Rotarian Roy Wykes sadly passed away on the 7th December. Roy was a long term member of our club, living first in East Knoyle & then in Wilton where he still remained a member. Roy’s personality is encapsulated by Eddie Clements comment ” He was a genuine friendly & kind man & a good Rotarian”. Our condolences to Nina & family & thank you to Geoffrey Hughes who represented the club at the funeral on the 20th December in Salisbury.

12 December – Meeting

We met at the Fleur and enjoyed a social meeting and as it was the festive season only a brief business session. The following points were covered but for fuller details see the members only section for an addendum to Club Council minutes.

Review of Club Procedures (based on Document from District) – We had already addressed most of this in a full review three years or so ago. However one significant idea did emerge namely that we should put a display in an unused shop window in town to advertise ourselves.
Cycle Speedway Track. We should pursue this initiative which had received strong support from the Town Council and for which a suitable site had now been identified. Section 106 funding should be available. Tony Morgan requested and was given members support and enthusiasm was demonstrated.
Burns Night – members were enthusiastic about a proposal for a Burns Night this January.
Safeguarding – there was a discussion about members responsibilities and “Disclosure and Barring” requirements – Secretary to check some details.
Risk Assessment – The importance of this was discussed and a suitably qualified member will be approached to help review risk assessments as needed.

19 December – No Meeting

21 December – Rotary Christmas Party

Rotarians, Wives,Partners and friends accepted an invitation from the Gillingham Rotary Club for dinner & entertainment at the Olive Bowl in Gillingham. The evening was a great success and the opportunity to join our nearest club & renew long established personal friendships. The food was excellent & the entertainment was provided by the Gillingham Town Brass Band. Whilst we did not win any raffle prizes it was good to know that about £1000.00 was raised for the Air Ambulance & Local Charity’s, also a generous donation was made to the Band.
