Sunday the 2nd
This was a great success. We were very lucky with the weather which was warm but not so warm as to persuade people to go to the beach. We had a full music programme in the idyllic surroundings of the Abbey grounds and country dance as usual in front of the Town Hall. The Celtic knot performed in front of the Rotary tea-tent, which did heavy business and the Community choir sang close to the War Memorial.
A record number of visitors climbed the Trinity church tower for the best view in town. The Stalbridge Linen van pull again proved a great success with the fire brigade proving worthy winners. The Rotary bottle stall proved as always a very popular hit. Face painting and the children’s fairground rides did good business and the Climbing wall and Mad Science attracted the young and the young at heart.
As usual the parade was led by the town band; and large crowds – probably swelled by visitors to the Fringe – enjoyed the wide range of stalls and crafts. The Hog roast and ice-cream van did a roaring trade.
Many thanks to all who made this not just a very successful fundraiser but also a wonderful community day.
Monday the 3rd
No meeting.
Monday the 10th
This was Trish Lever’s first meeting as our new President – congratulations from us all Trish.
Unfortunately we had no speaker due to a last minute cancellation, this doesn’t happen often and gave us a good chance to chat and socialise.
Monday the 17th
We learnt that our cycle ride had had 220 riders and raised £2,400. It will be back again next year on Sunday 20th May 2018. We discussed support for various good causes, made plans for a Senior’s day and closer links with Shaftesbury School.
Our Cycle speedway project continues to make good progress.
Monday the 24th
The “father” of the club, longest serving member Geoffrey, was the speakers friend this evening and what a good choice – Dr Vanessa Spencer of Shaftesbury Chiropractic. Vanessa took us through all of the various parts of the human bone structure with the aid of her partner for the evening “Fred” or maybe it was “Freida” the skeleton and challenged members to answer questions that might be called a bone quiz. Whilst this was a serious subject Vanessa spoke with humour and considerable knowledge.
Monday the 31st
Twenty nine Rotary members, wives and partners turned out for the July partners evening at the La Fleur De Lys in Shaftesbury, including one (Bob Shearn) with a cane for a sprained ankle who was looking for sympathy – it turns out he had a broken bone in his leg, so a bit of TLC is indeed deserved.
Berenice Deakin (left), chair of Gold Hill Fair committee, presented a £2,000 cheque to Hannah Nobbs (2nd left) from Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance and Paul Whiteman (right), chair of community committee presented another £2,000 cheque to Trevor Rogers (2nd right) from Prostate Cancer. This money was raised by local Rotary members from the Gold Hill Fair and north Dorset Cycle Ride
