8th September
Charity Golf. Another hugely successful golf day was held at Rushmore Park on the 8th September 2017, where 25 local sponsoring teams set out in the drizzling rain but all with good humour and the clear intent to have a great day. Spirits were raised when the rain stopped and the sun shone through.
The overall winners were Johnsons Stalbridge Linen, followed by Travis Perkins with Wessex Group in third place.
The event was held for the benefit of www.dorsetmind.org.uk and other Rotary charities. Congratulations, as all ways, to Richard and his small team for organising such a great day and raising awareness of this good cause. Thanks also to the Wessex Group who are our main sponsors again this year and to the 25 other local businesses. The event concluded with a most enjoyable meal in the club house.

10th September
Sturminster cheese festival. A big thank you to the 6 Rotarians and 3 partners who gave the time to Support this ever popular local event.
11th September
St James church. Alan Carter, one time senior partner of The Longmead Vetinary Practice was the guest speaker at Shaftesbury Rotary on Monday night. Alan, long time church warden of St James Church and treasurer of the Friends of St James spoke passionately about the challenges faced by the church in the modern age.
Alan talked about the history of the iconic Shaftesbury building and the uphill struggle with a dwindling congregation and the cost of maintaining the church and then about the possibilities of a multi use community building without detriment to a place of worship.
As Alan said, all a matter of financial investment.
17th September
Wareham big cycle ride. Following the tremendous support received from the Wareham Rotary club to our fledgling North Dorset cycle ride we were pleased to return the favour when 8 Rotarians and 1 Grandson helped to marshal the route and man the refreshment pit stop.
18th September
Business meeting. A full and detail discussions covering the activities of the combined Community and Vocational committee which related to closer contacts with the Shaftesbury school. “kid’s out” opportunity. Late night shopping, and Christmas events. The combined International and Foundation Committee focused on the annual “shoe box” collection and Rotary International emergency help to the hurricane victims in the Caribbean. 25th September
Girl Guides. After many years of temporary meeting places hosted by schools and other Community groups, The Shaftesbury Guide Association has been given the opportunity to build its own Headquarters. With Rangers, Guides, Brownies and Rainbow units meeting weekly it has been often difficult to share facilities with others.
The Lindlar Community hall built in the mid 80’s and now owned by Spectrum have agreed for the Guides to extend the building to provide a separate meeting hall for the guides, whilst sharing some of the kitchen, washroom and entrance facilities. This arrangement has minimised the build costs and the target for the shell is £25,000. The funds have been raised so far from local charities, businesses and individual donations and only have a few more thousand to meet the target to build the shell. With the support of this year’s Carnival and a few more donations, they are aiming to break ground in New Year. Please support their “Buy a Brick” or other fund raising opportunities.
Once the shell is completed, they already have offers of materials and labour support to carry out the services and fitting out of the interior, but all additional help would be welcome to complete this project at the earliest opportunity. After Ray’s excellent presentation Trish lever welcomed Billy Coles the third generation family member of Coles Fairground. Billy was in Shaftesbury for his family’s 84th consecutive year to add to the fun and tradition of Shaftesbury carnival he offered a brief insight to the history of the fair.
