14th – Meeting

Perhaps it was fortuitous that the speaker cancelled at the last minute as Rotarian Paul Slimm who is responsible for the big cycle ride needed a considerable amount of time to share all of the organisation details so everybody involved was prepared for Sunday the 20th May.

20th – North Dorset Cycle Ride

On a glorious sunny summer day in Shaftesbury, the town Mayor Piers Brown sounded the klaxon and set off the 3rd North Dorset Cycle Ride. The day kicked off with the 50mile ride, with over 150 enthusiastic riders and many spectators watching on. The 25 mile and 12mile rides, kicked off two hours later, again started by Mayor Piers Brown. The event had even more entrants, than last year with a total number of approximately 250 cyclists.

The fastest cyclists in the 50mile ride, were Paul Hopkins and Adam Bolton, completing the course in 2 hours 40 minutes approximately. The fastest cyclist in the 25mile ride was David Hassle who raced up Gold Hill. Finally, the 12mile ride saw young Will Bowden race up Gold Hill to finish ahead of the 12mile ride.

The event organized by Shaftesbury Rotary Club under the leadership of Paul Slimm, proofed a very successful day raising in excess of £5000. Unique to this year, cyclists and spectators were encouraged to stay and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Park Walk with live music from Shaftesbury Town Silver Band, a barbeque, licensed bar, tea and coffee.

Shaftesbury Rotary Club would like to say a big thank you to Farnfields Solicitors for their generous sponsorship. They would also like to thank all the volunteers that helped to make the day very successful.
