Betting on Rotary
A blend of American supper, Casino games topped with Posh frocks and black tie might well describe the Casino night in aid of Sepsis UK held by Martin and Sadie. 20 well turned out couples braved the weather to give the roulette a spin, bluff at the poker table or try their chance at Blackjack.
When natural caution had been overcome, the gambling resulted in some extraordinary results with many (including the host) losing all within minutes. 3 of our guests accumulated over 1000 chips with the winner, Bernard at an amazing 1600 chips, all won on the last turn of the cards at Blackjack. The meagre prize of a bottle of prosecco seemed inadequate, but this didn’t stop Bernard from Parading it around as though it were the FA cup!

21st – Business meeting.
We met again for the first time after Christmas for our monthly business meeting. We learnt that our recent Casino Evening at Martin Sayers’ house had raised £340 for Sepsis UK. We also received a letter of thanks from Shelterbox for our recent donation of £1000. A full report can be accessed on the members page.
28th – Speaker Julia Killick CBE.
Julia Killick CBE was introduced to the Club as speaker for the evening on 28th January.
A former Prison Governor of HM Guys Marsh & Holloway Prisons, Julia was awarded the CBE for her services to HM Prison Service in 2016.
Julia gave an interesting and enlightening talk of her life as a Prison Governor.
She explained the many difficulties faced by both prisoners and staff within the Prison service, covering life from a Prisoners point of view, the level of staffing, financial and discipline to rehabilitation. She also touched on her experiences of disturbances and rioting within Prisons. The many challenges faced today were explained, especially the difficulties such as identification and detection of drugs, the effects and problems they create, the learning of new skills within Prison and the prospect of job opportunities on release. She then discussed the support and understanding of family issues and the different outlook of male and female prisoners.

Julia also spoke of the countries prison population, comparing the UK prison population against other countries explaining UK imprisoned a higher percentage per capita than many other countries. She explained the difference today in managing Prisons and her views on how change has affected the role of Prison Governor. Julia took questions from members who showed great interest in her talk.
