9th – Genette’s Job Talk
Genette explained how she had completed her law degree at Glamorgan University, her postgraduate Legal Practice Course at Bournemouth University and how she’d worked for Bailey & Co in Blandford as a legal secretary until the Family Law Assistant left and she became a trainee solicitor with the firm. She spent two years training before qualifying as a solicitor. The firm later merged and become Blanchards Bailey where she worked until starting at Rutters in June 2016.
Genette explained she deals with divorce, financial claims as a result of a divorce, prenuptial agreements, financial issues arising from the separation of cohabiting couples as well as resolving child arrangements after a relationship breakdown. She explained it is difficult managing people who are going through a very difficult time in their lives however, she enjoyed helping people with their legal issues.
She mentioned the difficulties faced by people due to the demise of legal aid and the difficulties some people now face trying to fund legal representation privately as a result.
Genette warned about the difficulties faced by people who are simply living together and how they are not entitled to the same financial claims and protections as a married couple, if their relationship breaks down. Explaining there is no such thing as Common Law Husband and Wife, which led to some interesting questions from members. She also mentioned that there is a huge lack of understanding of how the law works when it comes to the breakdown of a marriage or a cohabiting relationship, and that the lack of understanding does not help people if their relationship ends.

16th – Business Meeting
We discussed early plans for our May 2020 Cycle event, and made a provisional agreement for a substantial donation to Prostate Cancer research, out of the proceeds of the 2019 event. There are still some figures to come in before this can finalised.
We also discussed the Public Access Defibrillator in the town which we funded a few years ago. It will be due for replacement in the near future. We made plans for our annual education session. It is very easy to use the device if required. This session will take place at 7pm at the Football Club in Coppice street on Wednesday October 23rd and all are welcome.
We then finalised plans for our visit at the beginning of October from our twin club in Heerlen in the Netherlands.

23rd – Shaftesbury Fire Crew Talk
We welcomed two crew members from Shaftesbury Fire Station, Richard Chave and Daphnee Chapados, who gave us an insight into the role of a Firefighter today.
Shaftesbury is a very active and busy station with two pumps, manned entirely by retained fire crew. They cover Shaftesbury and the surrounding area, including Tisbury and Mere, but can be called to any part of Dorset or Wiltshire and have frequently done so. In March 2018 they were called up to support Salisbury Fire Station, during the novichok poisoning.

Shaftesbury crew respond to all sorts of emergencies, in addition to fires and alarms, they attend many road traffic collisions, chemical spills, rescue people trapped in lifts. They have released a child who managed to get their head stuck in park bench, even rescuing a deer trapped in iron railings.
Most rural communities are only covered by retained fire fighter’s, but it is reassuring to think that if we are unfortunate enough to experience an emergency ourselves these men and women, drop everything when their alerter goes off and come to our rescue.
30th – Chris Hardiman Shoebox Talk
We had an interesting talk by Chris Hardiman about Xmas shoeboxes, each year various schools and organisations in Shaftesbury fill these boxes with gifts for disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe and Chris had taken over this task for the District for the first time this year.
He explained that they had hired a warehouse for all the boxes to be delivered and several Rotarians had agreed to help at this warehouse on Sat 16th November as boxes would be arriving from various Rotary clubs within the District.
All boxes should be checked at each club making sure that any banned items, eg liquids, batteries, warlike toys, religious material and sweets are removed and that each box is marked with girl/boy and the relevant age due to the contents. The boxes should also have the donating club identified.
Additional – Golf Day 2019
Shaftesbury Rotary Club, led by Richard Shean, delivered yet another hugely successful Golf Day at Rushmore. This year we were blessed with sunshine and supported by 18 local sponsoring teams.
All 18 teams started together with a Shotgun Start, this allowed to complete their rounds together and enjoy lunch and the 19th hole! Whilst the weather was enjoyed by all, the strong wind made for an interesting game. The Par 3, 14 players were hitting into the wind, with only two players managing to make it to the green and walk away with a prize!
The main beneficiary to the Golf Day is Shaftesbury Charity Hope which is a charity specializing to provide drop-in mental health services and out-of-hours assistance as part of a partnership with two other Dorset social enterprises.
Thank you to Richard as always and to the Ladies, Dawn, Pamela and Sonia, who used their charming skills in selling raffle tickets which alone raised over £450.
