Whilst we only had two meetings it was still quite an active month with the business meeting, the Christmas dinner with wives and partners, the Rotary “kids out” circus which we sponsored for local children at Shaftesbury school and, on the last Saturday before Christmas, our brave Rotarians rattled tins and collected money outside Tesco for local deserving causes.

Wow! What a full-on month. Whilst we started quietly with our usual no meeting on the first Monday, we went full speed into getting to know students at the Shaftesbury boarding school, then the annual shoe box collection and delivery followed by a talk about “Rotakids”. A fascinating visit to the Old Vic in Bristol, then our business meeting and AGM. And if that was not enough we undertook mock interviews at the Shaftesbury Academy school and finally concluded with a most interesting talk about a wine vineyard on the outskirts of Shaftesbury.

A wonderfully varied selection of guest speakers, a packed business meeting and a trip to a gin distillery (!) made October a very enjoyable and informative month. We welcomed Claire Commons our Town Clerk. Virginia Edwyn-Jones told us how she and friends were hoping to raise £50,000 for Carers UK and Liz Gray spoke to us about her upcoming project in a rural community in Northern India.

After a quiet August we had a very busy month with the annual Rotary golf competition. Giving support at the entrance gate for Sturminster Rotary at their cheese festival. Helping Wareham Rotary to marshal their big cycle ride. A speaker giving an insight to the proposed restoration work at St James church, listening to the aspirations of the local girl guides group and if that was not enough we had a special guest brought by our President and of course our monthly business meeting.

Following five months of high activity within the club’s programme, it was a welcome break to have a quiet August with just two meetings due to the calendar and a Bank holiday. So the regular comment of “read more” is in fact read less, having said that, we did have a very enjoyable social evening on the 14th and a productive business meeting on the 21st.
