Not a high-profile month for us, but busy nonetheless with the aftermath of the Charity Cycle Ride and the final plans for the Gold Hill Festival and Dog Show to put together. President David is nearing the end of a busy year for the club and is already looking at what to tackle next.

We kicked May off with the North Dorset Cycle Ride in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and other local charities. We followed that up with a talk from the Hilltop Litter Pickers. We ended the month with incoming Rotary President Peter Sale presenting his plans for the coming year.

The big takeaway from April was the 60th Anniversary Celebration of Shaftesbury Rotary Club. We also had our AGM meeting, our usual business meetings, including a talk from retired nuclear submarine commander Tim Green and we announced the winner of the Shaftesbury Rotary Caldwell Award.

A lot for us to discuss in the shortest month of the year, including the 60th anniversary of the Shaftesbury Rotary Club and plans for annual events, as well as the great charity worked carried out by The Halo Trust, whilst we also partnered with Shaftesbury School to organise the Youth Speaks debating competition and began Abbey First School’s RotaKids programme for 2023.

We head into the final month of 2022 with a quiet November. We held are usual two business meetings, which included a great story from a Scandanavian cruise Steve Keates with a generous presentation, as well as positive updates on the RotaKids initiative and the Young Chef and Youth Speaks competitions, both of which are to be held early in 2023.

We had a lot going on this October, starting with a social and recruitment evening at Breezy Ridge VIneyard Restaurant. We were then treated to a talk from Ian Kellett, secretary of The Shaftesbury & District Historical Society whilst Shaftebury’s RotaKids club launched. Later in the month, we had a fundraising quiz before rounding out with our second business meeting of the month.

A busy month this month, as we began by paying a visit to our twinned town of Heerleen in the Netherlands. We also launched RotaKids Shaftesbury and had our annual golf day. We had our usual business meetings, and finally we bid a sad farewell to Mike Foote.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, whose dedication to humanitarian causes and unwavering commitment to peace and the environment deeply inspired Rotary members around the world, especially those in the Commonwealth countries. The Queen was a supporter of Rotary’s polio eradication and humanitarian missions. She received the Rotary International Award of Honor, the organization’s highest recognition, in December 2013 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of her coronation. Her late husband, Prince Philip, was an honorary member of the Rotary clubs of Kings Lynn, Windsor & Eton, Windsor St. George and Edinburgh.
